An industry total answers a different question from a category flow. A large assets-under-management figure can attract attention without explaining what changed or why.
AMFI maintains official monthly and quarterly industry disclosures. Start from its research-data page, then record the period and disclosure type you actually downloaded. This guide deliberately does not insert an unverified current-month figure.
Label the measure first
Write down whether a number is a closing asset value, an average asset value, a subscription, a redemption or a net flow. These measures are related, but they are not interchangeable.
For a simplified illustration, an asset pool starting at 100 could receive net contributions of 5 and finish at 108 after valuation changes. The change of 8 is not automatically a net inflow of 8. Real reports require additional reconciliation and the precise definitions used by the publisher.
Match the comparison
Compare the same category, measurement method and reporting period. A quarterly average cannot be casually compared with a month-end balance as though both represented identical observations.
Check whether categories were added, definitions changed or an earlier observation was revised. Keep those changes alongside your chart rather than hiding them in a calculation.
Avoid reading motives into totals
Aggregate flows do not identify every investor’s reasons or predict the next market move. They can help frame a research question; they cannot replace a suitability assessment or establish which fund you should buy.
