On 7 October 2026, SEBI published a circular introducing a Credit Risk-o-Meter as an additional disclosure mechanism for debt securities. The official announcement is here.
The useful distinction is between receiving another disclosure and completing an investment assessment. A simpler label can improve visibility while leaving important questions for the reader.
Start with the particular security
Identify the issuer, maturity, payment structure and documents being compared. Check whether the information refers to the same instrument and the same date. A description copied from a different issue can create false comfort even when the issuer’s name is familiar.
Keep different risks separate
Credit questions concern the issuer’s ability to meet obligations. They do not replace questions about price changes, trading liquidity or when you need access to money. A useful research note gives these concerns separate lines rather than compressing them into a single judgement of safety.
For example, an investor who needs money next month faces a different practical question from someone assessing a long holding period. Both still need to understand what they are reading.
Follow the primary disclosure
Consult the circular and the issuer’s current documents for the applicable scope, presentation and implementation details. This article does not reproduce a classification scale or assume that every debt product follows the same framework.
Use an additional risk indicator to organise further investigation: what changed, which document supports it and what remains uncertain?
Announcement checked on 14 October 2026. No yield, issuer or debt security is recommended here.
