A result is meaningful only beside a comparison that answers the same question. Comparing unlike investments can reward a presentation for taking different risks rather than for making better decisions.
Define what is being evaluated
Is the exercise assessing an equity strategy, a mixed portfolio, a cash-management process or a research signal? Record the intended role before choosing the reference.
The SEC’s investor-education material explains that asset allocation depends on investment horizon and risk tolerance. Read the educational overview. It describes general principles, not Indian product requirements.
Make the accounting comparable
Use consistent dates and clarify how income, expenses and cash flows are treated. A gross model return and a net client return are different observations. A price-only comparison and one including distributions also require explanation.
For an illustrative research worksheet, give each series columns for start date, end date, cash flows, included costs and source. If a column cannot be completed, mark the comparison as provisional rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
Examine the path as well as the endpoint
Two outcomes with similar final values can have very different interim losses and liquidity requirements. Ask whether the comparison took similar risks and whether a person could realistically have maintained the process.
Choose the reference before examining which one flatters the result. Retain an unchanged baseline when the research question remains unchanged, and document any legitimate reason for replacing it.
